Quick answer
What do Scottish homeowners ask most about battery arbitrage?
These FAQs give short, plain answers to the questions Scottish homeowners ask most about battery arbitrage: whether it is worth it, how smart tariffs work, whether you need solar, how VPPs pay, how HMRC treats the income, and what planning or grid paperwork is needed. Each answer is dated and sourced where it quotes a figure.

Is battery arbitrage worth it in Scotland?
It can be. Scotland has some of the UK's widest Octopus Agile spreads (17–37p between off-peak and peak in Q2 2026). The battery earns the gap between the price it charges at and the price you avoid, minus round-trip losses. Whether it is worth it depends on your tariff, usage, installation cost and how many cycles you run, so a no-obligation survey gives figures for your home.
Do I need solar panels for battery arbitrage?
No. Pure grid arbitrage charges from the grid at off-peak rates and discharges at peak rates. Solar helps because it gives you your own energy to store or export, but it is not required.
What is a VPP and should I join one?
A Virtual Power Plant (VPP) aggregates hundreds of home batteries and sells their combined flexibility to the grid. Joining a VPP can add a second income stream on top of arbitrage, paid as bill credit or cash depending on the scheme. Compare VPPs in our directory.
Is battery arbitrage income taxable?
Yes, once profits exceed the £1,000 trading allowance. It is treated as miscellaneous income or trading income depending on the scale and regularity of activity. See our HMRC guide for details.
What is the SEG export rate?
SEG flat rates published by suppliers ran roughly 1p to 25p per kWh in 2026. Outgoing Octopus flat rate is 12p/kWh from 1 March 2026. Time-of-use export tariffs can peak above 30p. Check current rates before modelling income.
Do I need planning permission for a battery?
Most domestic batteries do not need planning permission. If your property is in a conservation area or is a listed building, you will need consent. A building warrant may be required via eBuildingStandards. We handle this as part of the installation.
What is G98/G99 and do you handle it?
G98 and G99 are grid connection notifications required by your Distribution Network Operator (DNO). In Scotland, SP Energy Networks covers the central belt and south, and SSEN covers the Highlands and islands. We handle the paperwork as part of every installation.
How much does a home battery cost in Scotland?
Cost depends on battery capacity, brand, inverter and how complex the installation is, so we do not publish a single price. After a no-obligation survey you receive a written quote for your home. Finance available, subject to status.
How long do batteries last?
Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) home batteries are designed for many years of daily cycling, and their usable capacity fades gradually over time. Your written quote names the exact battery model, its manufacturer warranty and the capacity it is guaranteed to retain.
Can I use my battery for backup power?
Most home batteries can provide limited backup power during an outage. The duration depends on battery capacity and what you are powering. Full home backup requires additional wiring and a transfer switch — discuss this at survey.
What is round-trip efficiency?
Round-trip efficiency (RTE) is the percentage of energy you get back from a battery after charging losses. A typical AC-coupled battery has an RTE of about 88%. This means for every 10kWh you put in, you get about 8.8kWh back.
