What is a Virtual Power Plant (VPP)?
A Virtual Power Plant (VPP) is a network of distributed energy resources — including home batteries, solar systems, and electric vehicles — that are coordinated to act as a single power plant. VPP aggregators pool thousands of small batteries and dispatch them during periods of high grid demand, earning revenue for participants.
For home battery owners, VPP participation offers an additional revenue stream beyond simple arbitrage. When the grid is under stress (typically on cold winter evenings), your battery can be automatically discharged to support the grid, earning you credits or payments.
Scotland is particularly well-suited for VPP participation due to high renewable penetration and grid flexibility needs. Most VPP schemes are compatible with existing battery systems and require minimal setup.
